- Business Podcast: the guy is going to be listening to a business podcast that me and my partner Mateo are recording next week. We still have to work on the script, but we probably will have the mic from BECON TV. Examples for inspiration: Start up, How I built this, The Pitch.
- City: we decided we simultaneously want diagetic sounds of the city that I will record Monday. We want honks, car, etc. If I can't find it when I go, we will have to look in the sound effect library our teacher recommended.
- Poem: We already have the guy that will do the voice for the poem, however, we are on spring break and we have to make sure our schedules don't have conflicts to record one day. The poem also has to be finalized.
- Music: We also have the song that starts as soon as he is approaching the train station. I have to see how I'm going to edit it so that it sounds faint and when he removes his headphones the podcast stops and he listens to the song clearly.
Can you hear that?
For sound we have decided on doing several things:
Untitled
Name, name, name. What will the title be? It has to be meaningful, it has to make the audience interested in the film, making them want to watch it, and it has to have relevance (?), maybe not necessarily relevance.
Since we want our film to be in Spanish, the title should be in Spanish too. We want it to have something to do with impossible love, or love that can't happen or that consumes you.
We have the following options:
- Tulipán sin agua (tulip without water): the tulip is beautiful, but without water it won't survive, however, the water does not need the tulip at all, much like out characters.
- Nicotina (nicotine): something addictive, that you can't stop consuming even though it is bad for you. Like the guy with the girl.
- Fumar(Smoking): same as nicotine, this would contrast their relationship with addiction, shining it with a negative light (not sure if we want that)
- Mares y océanos (seas and oceans): this would contrast with the drowning mentioned in the song and the poem, and relate to their infinite ambitions, their personalities, and their complexities.
- Dolor exquisito or La Douleur Exquise (French)(Exquisite pain): The heart-wrenching pain of wanting someone you can’t have.If we do it in french, as pretty as it sounds, it wouldn't make much sense.
- Siempre tú(Always you): relating to the song
- Ahogándome (drowning): relating to the poem, and the feeling he has of drowning in her
- Como quererte (How to love you): more like a rhetorical question, relating to the difficulties he faces to understand her.
Hopefully we can decide on one soon, or come up with more

coloring
The feel of a film can be perceived from the hues it presents. I believe coloring is one of the most important aspects in a film. Especially in indie films.
That is why my group and I are having some issues deciding which hues to focus on.
This were our initial options:
Since I'm pretty sure I'm doing pink, I want to draw inspiration from films with similar coloring. I did some research and I found a podcast by A24, were Greta Gerwig and Barry Jenkins, directors of Ladybird and Moonlight respectively, talk about the coloring of their films and their choices. Gerwig talks about the many choices when making a film, shooting on film, layering colors, using xerox, etc. and i thought it was interesting listening to this amazing directors, having the same dilemmas I'm having, obviously in a smaller scale. "It felt like the painted frames of early color films. Like those Isadora Duncan movies where she would paint her skirts". That's how Jenkins describes the coloring of ladybird, which is exactly the feel I'm trying to imitate.

It is clear Gerwig contrast the use of blue and pink throughout the film, which makes ladybird stand out with her hair. I am not sure i can achieve the same vibrance of both colors, without looking too intense for one with VSCOX, so I'm going to be playing with the filters to see.
Jenkins those the same in Moonlight:

That is why my group and I are having some issues deciding which hues to focus on.
This were our initial options:
As you can see we’re in between pink And blue hues. The pink would give it that feel of a romance and set the mood for the love story to evolve, and it look aesthetically pleasing too. However, the blue would foreshadow, with the poem, the breakup after, and it also makes the colors in a few shots pop. Like this one :
Blue symbolizes sadness and depression as Doctor uses in Inside Out to create the character of Sadness. Moreover, the term “feeling blue” represents the feeling of unhappiness, like Grad talks about in Why the color Blue is associated with sadness, the custom of relating blue to sadness goes back to West African culture and “the blues”, as well as ships that would raise a blue flag when a captain would die at sea. I thought the origin of the custom was extremely interesting. However, like Grad, I do not relate blue to sadness, I relate it to the sky, trust, and the sea, things that don’t make me sad.
Pink. I’ve been obsessed with millennial pink, I just think it’s so pleasing to the eye, and it give me an innocent feel that I want my character to have. Like in Baker and Grants article, pink symbolizes innocent love and passion, which is what I want my romance to feel like.
I created this color mood boards with Canva, PicsArt and VSCOX:
I fortunately, had the VSCOX subscription from before, so I will be using it to edit my shots. I'm still not sure if I will edit each individual shot, or just the final product. The later would be risky in terms of the brightness, since the lightning of each shot varies tremendously.
Here is a rough draft of the first minute. A lot has to still be done, but I just wanted to see the order of the shots, for when I edit in Final cut, since I have to go down to Miami. This was done in DaVinci Resolve, I had never used it before, but even though it is a great resource, I did not like it. It is very laggy, and to do precise cuts, its problematic. The transitions look rough, and it took me an unnecessary amount of time. It also takes very long to download the final product.
Anyway here it is:

We'll see how it turns out, but hopefully I can achieve something similar.

ACTION!
Sunday is the day!!
We left weston at around 3 to shoot in Miami. We got there at around 4. Like I said before, we did not have the drone for today, so we shot a few establishing shots with the camera just in case as a backup. We set up her little spot, and it looked super cute! We had her buddha, her vase, a polaroid camera, a book, the speaker, and a mandala rug. We shot her scene first.
We started by setting up the mic in the camera, and had some issues, because you could listen to a radio station, but we figured it out. Then she started dancing and we shot different angles, here are some pics of the shots:

Then, we shot some more close up artistic shots like this:
And some shot of the view, her set up, etc.
Then we started with him, and we shot in a building near by, as he was walking to the station, and the camera was following him. We did not have a stabilizer but hopefully, the shots don't look shaky. We shot different angles as he got to the station, and he saw her.
However, because of the busy time, there was a lot of people, and we could not shoot the ending, so we decided to change the end and shot in a nearby market.
But, It didn't convince me, so we might go back and shoot the ending another day. I'll start editing to see if we can work with what we have though, hopefully shooting another day isn't necessary, but we'll see.

makeup, accessories
Accessories are key for presenting the character's personality. So when choosing the girl's accesories, we had to be really careful to choose the right ones. Same thing with makeup.
We decided on doing simple makeup, but with a bold eye and blue eyeliner, to show her boldness and care free spirit. She wore eccentric earrings, colorful and big, for the same purpose. And the necklaces were different colors and big. Her hair was loose, to show her wild spirit. And her dress was flowy, to show her free spirit, that could also be seen in her being barefoot.
For the guy, he was wearing glasses to show his intelligence, and give a business like look. The dress shirt had different colors, to contrast his wish to be more free than his corporate job. He had headphones to show he was listening to a business podcast. He had a fancy watch to showcase his formal attire.

Ladies and Gentlemen we got him
We got him!!! I have my actor set, for sure, definite. He is my actress's friend and I think he'll do a great job. He doesn't have any shirt like the one I'm looking for so we have to go shopping.
We also called the Miami Dade transit and they said we can record at the Bayfront park station, as long as we stayed off the tracks. So we will be heading there Sunday, and not the Hollywood one.
AND we got permission from Farmacos to use Siempre Tu in our video!! I was so nervous they weren't going to answer, and I was going to have to change my whole idea, but after multiple attempts, and dms, and comments, they did!!!
Translation: Hellooo thank you for writing to us and for the kind words :) if its for school its okay. I believe there wouldn't be a problem. Let me know how it goes :) hugs. Diego.
Everything is coming together, I'm so excited for Sunday!

Can we go thrift shopping?
So Friday, I went thrift shopping with my actress. We were going to go to Plato's closet, becuase there you cane exchange old clothes for new ones, but it was too far and it was closing soon, so we decided to go to the Goodwill that is like 15 minutes away.
First we head on to look for long skirts, and had this outfit planned out. However, it was too monotone, and she didn't feel comfortable in the skirt. So we discarded the idea of the skirts and moved on to dresses!
We found some options, but nothing convinced us. Then we found the perfect dress in a hidden rack! You'll see it in the vid, its a surprise!
We also need LOTS of accessories so she looks like a gypsy kind off.
Then we looked for a dress shirt for the guy. I didn't want anything to basic. We found the PERFECT shirt, and it wast 50% off! It looked vintage and modern and fancy.
We also got for 1$ each, a vase thing for the coins, a book, and a little buddha.
It was overall succesful and we were set for sunday.

SOUND
a concept that is very important in film making.

We were debating wether to start the establishing shot with city noises like this:
or with the song like this:
Also we don't know if we were debating wether to put the voice over in the establishing shot or when the guy is walking.
So we decided on starting the opening scene with the establishing shot of city noises and the credits and the poem starts half way through and goes into when we first see the guy as he is walking to the train station listening to a podcast on business (to introduce his interests), and you can listen to the city sounds as he walks (like what Cuaron decribes in Roma) and then he hears music faintly and is curious so he removes his headphones and the music grows louder as he approaches the girl, and then the music is the only sound, until it stops when the girl is about to fall and you can hear a train passing.
We have to figure out how to edit the sound to what we want, so that it has that powerful effect, because like Cuaron describes, it is as important as the image. We will be using Final Cut Pro, which i've used before. I started editing with IMovie, so transitioning to FCP was easy, I'm still figuring out, and since my computer can't support the program I have to edit in a friends PC, hopefully that works out. He is more savvy with sound mixing and editing so I'll ask for some advice.

I FOUND HER !!!!!
I have AMAZING news, I have found our gal!!!!! She is PERFECT for the role, AND she said yes to doing it.
She was a ballet dancer and she is exactly like our character. However, she can only film Sunday after 2pm, so hopefully we will have enough time to finish, we should since they changed the time because of daylight savings, and sundown is later now. If anything, we can finish during spring break. ALSO, our guy might look too young next to her since she is a senior and he is a junior, we'll have to see, if not we have a back up guy, BUT he is not Spanish so we would still use the other guy for the voice over.
I also rented the equipment from BECON-T and will be picking up the camera next Friday. I'm so excited to use it again. I will also have lighting equipment and a mic for the voiceover.
Sadly, the drone I was going to borrow from a friend is not available for Sunday, so we will have to do that another day, but we will have it. Just in case though, we will still do an establishing shot with the camera.
I still have to call the train station to see if we can record there, and I messaged Farmacos to ask about the song but they haven't answered :( will update on that.
Preparations for the big day are coming nicely, hopefully everything works out.

who is who?
In class we were peer reviewing each other's projects, and I explained mine. Everyone thought it was well thought out and structured so we're good there. I asked them about the sound and the order of it (will talk in another post), and we talked about my film's character development and since I haven't made a post about it, it thought i would tell you guys about it.
So, why do they break up¿? that was the major question. In the poem (previous post), the guy talks about getting lost in her adventures, her indecisions, not finding himself in her craziness, her ignoring him, and confusing him, etc. When i wrote that, I drew inspiration from the lyrics of Siempre Tu by Farmacos, and thought about what would make a person feel like drowning in a relationship, but still make them love their partner. What first came to mind was differences. So my group decided that their differences in interest, personality, etc, was the cause of their break up.
He falls in love with her adventurous personality, her spontaneousness, this girl that dances in a train station for fun, not need, a free spirit, the girl of his dreams, the girl that did and was everything he wanted to be and do, a girl that took him out of his comfort zone, and introduced him to a new perspective, BUT also a girl with no structure, that lived in the moment, with no thought on the consequences, which brings problems, a girl that brings uncertainty, and doesn't know what she wants, and a girl that can't understand his ambitions for the future. He is focused in his career, but also wants to have an spontaneous life, but with limits, He needs to see and know things clearly, and he tries to follow her along in her adventures, but gets lost in them, and sometimes, he has to pay the consequences. This differences are out of their control, and because of reasons of life, they're forced to make a choice between them or the future.

what to wear, what to wear
Okay so since we're filming next weekend (!!!), we started talking about what our actors are going to wear, so we started thinking about character development, and who our characters are going to be (next blog post), and we decided that the girl is a free spirit, spotaneous and adventorous so i created a mood board for her clothes :
I want her to look kind of hippie, with flowers on the floor where she's dancing, a flowy dress or skirt, loose hair with jewelry and maybe a hair accessory. Maybe she can be barefoot (if my actress doesn't mind, or with ballerina shoes)
For the guy, he is more structured, and business like so this is his mood board:
I want him to look like a hipster business guy , I dont know if those go together but we'll make it work. He will have glasses, a polo or buttoned up shirt, and look a little fancy, like he's going to an internship or something like that (cause they're teens).

cAn ANyOnE aCt????????
Something that can make or break a film, a director and her team can do EVERYTHING right, but if the acting sucks, the film probably will too, since editing can only go so far.
Chad Perkins, has a short film course, where he details the importance of acting in filmmaking, i didn't purchase the course, but in the overview, he mentions how Acting is one of the most misunderstood aspects of film, since "actors must be very in-tine to all the nuances of what they're feeling because those feelings are the tools of their craft." I need to be able to help my actors do this effectively, or no matter what my group and I do, the film won't live up to our vision. Of course this will be very hard, since i don't know any Hollywood actors, so that is one of the reasons why we decided to have almost no dialogue. We are planning on having a voiceover, of the guy reciting a poem he wrote to his lover, but before they meet, kind of like a flashback.
We already found our guy, and I believe he will do great, if he doesn't we will change him for someone else.
For the girl, we not only need an actress, but she has to be a dancer too (SOS), we decided to complicate ourselves, but hey if thats what it takes to make your our vision happen I'm all for it!
I have a few friends who are ballet dancers, i just have to see if they're good at acting too. If anything we will just take a walk to CBHS drama and ask around to see if anyone is interest, I'm sure someone would be down.

We want the poem to be in Spanish, because of the aesthetic, and because our film will have a political undertone of immigrants and their lives in the states ( the girl) and tourists (the guy) .We're in the process of writing it but here is a little snippet of what we have so far:
Me ahogo en tus infinidades
Corro en tus indecisiones
Me pierdo en tus aventuras
No me encuentro en tus locuras
Me encanto con tus maneras de confundirme
Estoy perdido en tu ignorarme
Eres mi debilidad
(I drown in your infinities
I run in your indecisions
I get lost in your adventures
I'm not in your follies
I loved your ways to confuse me
I'm lost in your ignoring me
You are my Weakness)
Take in mind that we are no poets, but I am consulting my AP Spanish Literature teacher to make it more authentic and good.

Storyboard
I am a proud advocate of Canva, i use it for EVERYTHING, and today i discovered they have storyboard templates!! I mean of course they do, they have everything and its FREE. I made a draft storyboard to start getting my ideas out of my imagination.
- On the first scene I want a drone shot of the train station as an establishing shot, and also for the title of the film.(still thinking about that one) faint modern music can be heard (maybe Farmacos, have to ask for permission)
- I want a close up of feet walking and people waiting for the train. Man starts reciting poem (voiceover)
- We can see the owner of the voice, he has headphones on and takes them off as he arrives to wait and sees something going on next to him (music stops, voiceover continues)
- Classical ballet music can be heard and the feet of the dancer can be seen as she dances to the melody
- She moves along the station (long take medium shot following her) as she gets into the dance more and more (passionate).

New trend?
So, I've been rewatching movies by my favorite directors because of the project, and obviously the Oscar season.
I noticed, that many directors of indiesque films, have a tendency to do two kinds of shots: long takes room to room, following a person, and close ups of their action.
In Roma, Cuaron starts the film with Cleo washing the floor of the garage, but you can only see a portion of her action from a high angle. Here's a clip:
There you can also see the long take from her turning off the lights and the camera follows her from room to room.
Of course i couldn't do this post without mentioning Wes Anderson, because it wouldn't be my blog. In Moonrise Kingdom's opening scene, the same technique is used to introduce the family to the audience, as well as their family dynamic:
Damien Chazelle did the same long take shot for the "Someone in the Crowd" musical number in La La Land:

Peter Hoar, does his own take with this technique in the first episode of The Umbrella Academy, by showing the house completely, and therefore all of the characters at the same time, but also showing individual shots of each one. Due to my resources i wont be able to do this but i still thought it was worth mentioning:
I believe this creates a very personal "following the characters" feel, which is what i want to achieve with my opening scene. My film needs to feel like a peeping into their life, day to day life, to make it raw and vulnerable, and i believe drawing inspiration from this shot will help me do that.
The use of close ups is something i really want to use in my film, because again it creates a vulnerable, personal connection with the audience, if used correctly.
In this clip of 2016 close ups, we can see shots from Moonlight, Arrival, 10 Cloverfield Lane, etc. It is evident the strong effect this shots can have on films and how interesting they can be. I've now decided on having a girl dancing in the train station for money, preferably ballet, and doing a close up on her feet and the coins hitting the cup, as well as her eyes. I've been obsessed with eye and sky shots so i want to include them in my scene.

Today, my partner Mateo and me talked about our schedule for the following weeks to set the dates we will shoot, talk about the process, edit, etc.
To make it easier, we created a Google Calendar , where we can create events and reminders of our due dates and our conflicts. I use this google gadget on a daily so i thought it would be the most effective way to keep us organized and make sure we have everything planned out on time.
We decided to shoot Sunday, March 17th, because is the day we both can. Weekends are better for both of us since I have track practice every weekday, an Mateo works almost every weekend but this one he is available. We are planning on starting early in the morning so that we can shoot everything in one day, at least the train station scene, so that the lighting and such stay the same. I plan on calling both train stations (Hollywood and Miami) next week to make sure we can record there, and see if we need permission.
I also have to contact James Guarasci from BECON, he offers equipment for Broward students. I have borrowed the equipment before for another project and it is AMAZING, so hopefully he has equipment available for that date. Last time I used the SONY A7III and it worked great, so I'll probably ask for that one again. I need to ask for lighting equipment too, so that if the light is not good we can fix it.

We also have to think about who will our actors, and if they can that date, so it is safe to say that that date is subject to change. If anything we have spring break to work on it, so it should be fine. We just don't want to leave everything last minute and end up rushing to finish.
Going back to the actors, we want to ask someone from theater and our Spanish friend to do the voice over. I just feel like they will bring our idea to life better. Hopefully our schedules sync!

Railroaded
I started researching train station scenes and I'm more sure now of my decision. I believe that keeping it in one location will build the tension and intrigue for the opening scene, nevertheless, i have to keep the shots interesting to make sure my audience does not get bored.
I watched the film Brief encounter over the weekend and I really liked the classic romance. The train station scene is iconic, and i would like to pull some ideas from it like the waving back to his lover, but i don't know if it's allowed so I'll have to find out. The storyline is also similar to what i want, since the lovers can't be together because of difficult circumstances.
Of course i could not make a post about train station scenes without including Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat by The Lumière Brothers (1895). Hopefully my audience doesn't run screaming out of the theater (get it?). Even though I believe the one shot worked perfectly for this film, for mine i don't think it would be a good idea since it would feel static, and i plan on having some dialogue. Not a lot though because i want to keep some mystery going.
I also watched Some like It Hot's train scene and the shots are amazing. I LOVE the shot if the feet moving, I absolutely want to do one like that, which is something i wanted to do with my old story in the airport like before. I also want the girl in the film to be dressed super fancy, and have an attitude like Marilyn in the excerpt.
I decided to start looking at some pictures of urban Train stations to see how i would like to organize my shot list.
Here are some that i liked:
This one could be where some dialogue takes place.
I liked this because I could maybe introduce a character.
This one could be used to introduce the setting.
Here are some i think would not work for me because of my location, resources or aesthetic:
Sadly there are no underground trains/metros near me.
I would've loved a scene like Gossip Girl's first scene, but theres no grand central station near me, or anything like it.

Short film?
I had a previous idea of the story line i wanted. It was going to start with a POV shoot of a Spanish guy walking to a coffee shop and seeing a girl in a white sweater and glasses by the window (I know very specific, it was very clear in my head) and then little snippets from their not yet relationship with the song "Siempre tu" by Farmacos and the guy reciting a poem. This shots would be at the beach, the airport, paint in their face, the park, I had everything thought out, and then we would be back at the coffee shop and she would look up and say: " Hola" (hi) and smile.
BUT after seeing this ted talk, I realized that i was giving tooooo much away! I needed to figure out how to modify or change my idea completely, to make it a great story that could be told, and not overwhelm my audience. Also i thought it would seem like a short film, instead of a film opening. I still wanted to be in Spanish, like with a Spanish accent, and a romance. So we are sticking to the genre.
While researching, I bumped into Bad times at the Royale and absolutely loved the opening scene angle/view here is a clip:

Even though it is a thriller, i liked the idea or the feel of it. My major inspirations are Call Me by your Name and Moonrise Kingdom. However, I think I would like an urban setting best, probably Miami, since its the closest city to me.
I drove pass a train station in Hollywood and decided I totally want a train station to be my location. However, I'm still debating if the Miami one is better, because i want to have a drone shot as the establishing shot, and the Hollywood station has the highway right there and I'm not sure i want that, the surroundings are not as aesthetically pleasing as the station. I'll research more on what approach i want to have towards the train, as well as the story. Im still sticking with the breakup though, i feel like i could start at the goodbye of the couple, to build excitement.
